This project focused on the mathematic wonder that is the Mobius Strip. A Mobius Strip is an interesting illusive surface that is technically one-sided and looks like an infinite loop. With the aim to investigate structural form, perception and space, the Mobius form seemed like the perfect symbol to use. This project involved studying the form structurally by making multiple versions out of card, at different scales, as well as recording observational drawings, and experimental image making through photography.

The technicalities of constructing numerous samples of this structure, on larger scales and with different materials, evolved simultaneously with my image making, where the involvement of mirrors, interaction with light, and digital investigations excelled the ambiguity of the project.

Initial Construction

Exploring how multiples can be connected, and investigating the use of colour to show the illusive quality of the structure.

Development & Process

Sketchbook pages, considering the development of assembling multiple Mobius Forms, and how to reach desired effects.

Documenting process in my evolving studio space.

Alternates of the Initial Form

Experimenting with structure: observing light, shadows and alternate angles in order to explore the limits, and discover further potential, with the Mobius Form.

Experimental Photography

Playing with reflections, light and shadows to create ambiguous images with the Mobius Form: acknowledging other ways to showcase this interesting structure.

Scaling Up

Intervening Space with the Mobius Form, exploring how the structure can be positioned and how it might grow to engage with the space surrounding it.

Considering the application of my ideas on an even larger scale; how can the audience be immersed by the form? What material development would this include?

Deconstructing shapes from the Mobius Form

Digitally pulling apart the Mobius Structure: re-investigating form, shadows and highlights.

Within this project, the Mobius form has been investigated in terms of structure and its interaction with space. The ambiguity of this investigation has developed with the use of both physical and digital mediums, each of which have showcased alternate perceptions of this interesting surface.

As limitations due to Covid-19 impacted this project, applications for my ideas still had to progress. This directed my project into a more digitally-heavy investigation, where I started to create more complex structures using Adobe Dimension.

Below are some examples of the digital sculptures created.
